I attempted to make a base for a little ORPG game. I'm not really feeling the chibi face. How about you guys? I used http://www.byond.com/members/ BTeKs?command=view_post&post=1158892 as a reference. Not really sure how I'd draw a good looking face with a good looking body otherwise. Any pointers?

Them colors look like barf. And perspective is off, if your trying to make a 3/4ths perspective game.

No kidding. I was planning on cleaning it up. But, I decided to just fill in everything to finish it off and make it "presentable" for judgment by others.

Not even sure if I care about this base anymore. Produced it in 7 mins or so and already want to disown it. He just looks weird. Like he stares deep in to my soul and wants to kill me.

I really feel like doing a different style because obviously I'm not going to be like BTeKs at this rate lol.

Any suggestions?
Scrap it and try again. This time better colors and remember perspective you are going for.

Still looks horrible in my eyes. But, this is my second attempt. I'm going for a skinny (not bony) look. With a small yet curvy head.
Xirre I think I am following you or something I get a alert every time you post not sure why. Also that base is still better than I can do

The base, in my opinion, doesn't look good. His head seems a bit wide. His arms seem thick. His legs seem funny. He's not meeting up to my standards and I'm not drawing him right. :(

Edit:

Look at the lil egg head. :P

I also just put together that hotkey bar there just now since I couldn't get anything done with the base.

Had forgotten I fanned you. Also I have seen worse, by people that actually claim to be artist. As for me I have basicly no Artistic ability what so ever. I started working on Bloodlust again I have artist and things now as well. Just thought I would let you know. Sense I messaged you before about it.
Here check out a few characters from RPG games of the 90s. This should give you some sense about lighting, skin color, skin tone, and shape. http://www.spriters-resource.com/playstation_2/disgaea/ , http://www.spriters-resource.com/playstation/breathoffireiv/ , http://www.spriters-resource.com/playstation/fft/ You should also be able to find Breath of Fire 3 character/creature sprites on there too. What you should focus on is form, lighting, and values. After you put down your values and lighting then add the color to the figure. As for colors, it's all about experimentation. If you look at BOF 4 face-plates you'll see that they used some funky colors but it still reads. Also check this one out. http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299
I learned some new things and looked at some other bases and produced this:

I kind of like this one. I made the top of his head come in a bit more and left his jaw. To make his body symmetrical (with an extra space in the center, how I wanted it) I split him up down the middle. This gave his face a bit more chunkyness and gave me more room to work with.

I wanted to maintain my 32x32 format yet still utilize all the space I can. Splitting the image down the middle allowed me to do that. And, most of all, I darkened the edges and kept the same color for his shorts. Which are no longer shorts now and are instead boxers. Yep. Boxers.

I also did a little more to the UI since I had time. Gave it some depth in the center. It looked flat.

that looks way better
Indeed, definitely looks better man.
You need to make the arms, legs and body shorter.

You'll thank me later.

Definitely looks better.

I'll have to work on that Friday. Finals and midterms right now. I will update here when that comes.
Question. What if I left the size of the base and kept his idle images at 32x32 and made the overall icon size 96x96 and places this character in the center, giving him some freedom to work with? This way there is 1 32x32 icon on each side and it would probably save me the trouble of making little guys in a 32x32 area when I want someone taller.
That works artist do it all the time.

Well, sheesh. Good to know. I'll start doing that for animated art.
