First Impression of BYOND

When I first came across BYOND, I was at my friend's house playing on his PS2. I looked over at his PC screen and seen that he was playing some flashing board game like thing. It seemed like it featured stuff from Dragonball Z, so I assumed BYOND was a flashing Dragonball Z board-game. I figured out what it really was after I hijacked his PC and played on it until I got my own connection.

What was your first impression of BYOND?

actually i dont know but if you look at the hub it tells you the exact date that GOA "HUB" has been up. So you can probably check it on that or on youtube or something it has some videos from Masterdanvad or something from the BETA, you can estimate the amount of time the game has been up or something. But its close to 2-3 years.

Fff.
In December 2007, during my eighth grade year, my friend told me about "BYOND." He was searching for an online Final Fantasy game, and he found BYOND along with Final Fantasy 5: Another World. Naturally, Another World was the first game that I played and familiarized myself with; and because it was a fan-game off of m favorite series, I stuck with BYOND.

My first wasn't all that interesting, all I did was go to a new school, bullied some kid, and then some asian guy called William, told me not to be so mean to him, I was like w.e...i dont remember much from that point but he invited me over to his house, and asked him what he was playing and he said "Byond" I was like oh cool, and started playing Icon Ultima first....;D

I've been on for a long time now, but recently I've just been lurking the forums, not really interested in programming DM much now-a-days, trying to get into python and the sorts.

This is my first key. I came to BYOND already having an understanding of programming without atoms, so that was a giant boost right there. Nothing holds back BYOND developers like... well, to be honest, verbs. But after verbs, nothing holds back BYOND developers like DM's atomic system. The idea that there are "physical objects" and they actually "exist" in a specific "location" runs so counter to what programming is all about. It's powerful, yes, and it lets a lot of people who would otherwise have no chance get a taste for programming, but I'm not sure if it's a learning tool or a disservice in the long run.

First Impression, 2001-ish:

George Gnome co-creator: You know, the "user made game" might be a lot easier to make with this BYOND thing I found.

Iain: It looks like it's run in a virtual machine like Java, or something. No thanks.

Second Impression, 2003:

Iain's Brother: I'm playing this Dragon Warrior game online (SoE). You should play.

Iain: Eh, I'll give it a shot. Look at this little game I made.

Iain's Brother: Hey, that's pretty cool.

Iain: Yeah it is... wait, how'd it get to be 2010?

My very first impression: Wtf? I don't want to play games, I want to make them. Screw this.

That was in 2001.

In 2003: Oh yeah, give me some of that DBO action! What!? It's gone!? Aw! I was getting into that! Fine, I'll make my own damn game! Where's the tutorials!?

I thought it was pretty cool to be able to play games online with other people in a DragonBall fashion and such.
