i graduated from Navy boot camp a few hours ago and am hanging out in the MWR (morale, welfare, and recreational center) for the day, and then at 2 am next morning i fly to my A school. once i get there i'll be getting myself a laptop and i'll be able to make more useless blog posts during liberty each day. the hardest decision i'm facing right now is whether to get a laptop that's powerful enough to play modern games, or get a cheap notebook for class and a legit desktop PC for gaming. if anyone could provide some opinions on the matter, please do

in one week i head to Navy basic training for 9 weeks, followed by i think ~5 weeks of submarine school, A school for about 24 weeks, and then maybe or maybe not several months of C school depending on my rating. then it's 4 years of submarines and shore duty. my field is SECF, aka submarine stuff involving electronics and computers

i'll probably have some free time to visit BYOND during A school, but not much, so my sitting around in chatters and making useless blog comments will be very limited. you all will have to learn to continue on without me

connection resets, speed changes dramatically?

so i'm currently using a DSL connection from AT&T. i don't know much about it, i'm not the one who set it up. it's a very weak connection; has a very constant speed of 20kb/s. however, i've noticed that every once in a while the connection will suddenly reset on its own, and be much faster- 100-150kb/s, sometimes even faster. this occurs during the night, lasts for about 8-10 hours, and then (around 7 am it seems) it suddenly resets again and goes back to its sluggish 20kb/s. what i mean by "reset" is that it simply dies very fast and then comes back up about 1 second later. generally when my connection dies for any reason, it takes much longer than that to get it back into a working state, so these resets seem quite strange.

these occurrences are several days apart. sometimes it's 1-2 weeks before it happens again. what's happening? could it be a bandwidth cap/download quota? it seems to reset back to the slow speed even if i don't do anything intensive with the connection- just light browsing for 30 or so minutes.

in general, 20kb/s seems much slower than what i should be getting. i figure the "fast" speed is actually supposed to be the norm, and there's some sort of problem constantly holding it back. i'd like to figure out what it is, but i don't know where to start

so this is some game that was released in Japan in 2007, and some fans got permission to do an official translation of it and sell it in 'murrca, and it even got accepted by steam

it's a mixture of tycoon and dungeon crawl. you manage an item store, haggling prices, making the store look cool, and getting frustrated with annoying lolis who refuse to pay 110% of base price for bread

the most noteworthy thing about the game is the translation is really well done. it was done by a couple SA goons who are apparently very well-versed in moon runes and english alike, and it's so entertaining that it makes the weeaboo aspect of the game completely bearable.

oh, and the dungeon crawling is really good! anyways, the game is 20 bucks, but currently 10% off for peorder. there's a 1 to 5 hour (depending on how long it takes you) demo available: http://www.carpefulgur.com/recettear/demo.htm
