Red Cap review

A review for Red Cap created by Lesbian Assassin
Gameplay9/10
Presentation8/10
Originality10/10
Overall9/10
First, I'd like to explain why I'm reviewing this old game.
1- it's a really great game, and even though it's extremely outdated it's still far superior to most games available right now
2- hopefully this will get the game some more publicity so I can get games going easier
3- I want to provide an example of a proper review

Gameplay

The game consists of two teams-- basically "the good guys" and "the bad guys"-- sporting a grand total of 18 characters, all with unique abilities. The goal of the game is to either escort red cap to the basket and then to town to save the sick villagers or, as the bad guys, to prevent this from happening. The controls are very simple; directional keys to move, bump to attack, and the center key (5 on numpad) to use your character's special ability.

While getting into the fray is quite simple, once there is a full house of players many strategies and complex tactics arise and make the game highly entertaining. If many monsters are defending the western entrance to town, red cap can attempt to navigate the northern maze to sneak past them; however, the big bad wolf can move directly through trees, while the stellar invader can simply teleport right past them and into red cap's path. There are simply too many neat mechanics and strategies to try and summarize them all, but rest assured this game can keep you entertained as long as there is no shortage of players.

In addition, a map creation tool is available to ensure that the players never grow weary of the same stuff; the gameplay is so solid that different maps will cause different strategies to vary wildly in their success.

I gave the gameplay a 9 because while the actual mechanics and quality of play are astounding, the understandably old, outdated UI is less efficient than it could be.

Presentation

I am indifferent to the game's lack of sound; sure, it could possibly have improved the overall experience, but this game works just fine without it.

The graphics all share the same style and serve their purpose very well. They are not the greatest, but they all meld nicely and create a comfortable experience. In addition, the day/night system does not use simple shaded overlays, but instead has unique states of its terrain to provide a very nice looking darkness.

Originality

Both the gameplay and the general theme/aesthetics of the collective fairy tale creatures are unique to this one game and make it very enthralling and amusing. A confident 10/10.

Overall

This is a very entertaining and unique game, and its only huge drawback is that-- like all other action games on BYOND-- it stagnates without a constant, active playerbase to keep games going.

While the game is available for download on the hub, it's double zipped so BYOND does not automatically play the game; here's a direct link to unzip and start hosting the game or making a map: http://www.byond.com/members/BYONDAction/files/host_files/ LesbianAssassin_RedCap_3in1.zip
