Locked: Canceled projects suggestion in BYOND Discussion

I wish there was a penalty for people that do a Silkwizard move, but I know that won't be happening. Perhaps canceled projects or gluttered trash like DBZ rips, should just be removed from the hub.


PS. That would make Byond a better place, maybe more developers would be more devoted to their game, and Its fans.

Sorry, but Silk Is a perfect example of one of two major problems on Byond.


PS. Also It Is referred to as a silkwizard when a game Is canceled, due to how major DWO was. It's pretty much a universal term, becoese everey one knows what has happened, not to mention DWO was advertised at many gameing sites as well.

Yes, I know why you called it that. But people can drop their projects at any time, for any reason.

As far as it being "one of two major problems" in Byond, a lack of motivation for whatever reason is obviously nothing that the staff can do anything about. "Cleaning up" dropped projects (whether a person may go back to it or not) sounds like added work for little to no real benefit.

I wonder if I'd be going too far to say that people complaining of zeta rips is more of a problem than the rips themselves now. While the idea of cleaning up all of the ripped material would be a great thing to see happen, it probably isn't feasible to actually accomplish. If it were, then people wouldn't be asking that same question over and over and over again.

Well, the hub entries just sit there, and wast room.

PS. Also, I beleive that Byond should not allow people to host source codes on the hub, and they should start doing stuff about people that make "Rips".

I'm not lucky enough to have people clammering for the all-too-many non-completed games I've worked on, but I still feel a need to jump in here. Doing these games at the quality level Silk does is an immense investment of time, energy, and sometimes money (I know I've spent hundreds on tools in the development process). The community is lucky when such a developer decides to devote the time to put out such a game, and the community has basically no right to demand that someone release something, no matter what state it was allegedly in.

It's much more criminal for a developer to release a game that's not ready. The world is already filled with way too many of those.

The question here is how to expend your energy. Will you get good new games created by quality developers by trashing them at every opportunity because you disagree with a decision? I can pretty much guarantee that's the way to get *fewer* games released. Who's going to do games for a community that treats them like such crap?

Consider instead being supportive of developers, and or contributing your own time and talents to an existing team, or starting up your own team. If you have money and a developer needs money, consider donating. If you have art talent, consider helping provide art. Do positive things that make games more likely to be released, and we'll all be better off for it.

I'm sorry you misunderstood a few things, first of all the next version of DWO was just about to be released. As for money, and time problems, that's a reason to delay, not cancel. Also after spending all that time, and money, as It may have been, that's more reason not to cancel. The developer after so much work, time, money, and fan base, should feel some devotion to the project as well as the massive fan base. He stopped becoese he wasn't devoted anymore. It's sad, It was a verey good game. Also, he had a whole staff, I know people that made bigger systems by them selves, so haveing a "team" Is more of a luxery, not a must have.

PS. Deadron, people misunderstood my suggestions here.

I think I do understand, and what I'm saying is that no one but the developer has any say in that or a full understanding of why they made such a decision, and the only obligation the developer has is to themselves. It's understandable for fans to be disappointed, but disappointment is different than trashing someone who has worked very hard to provide quality work for the community.

If you want Silk to produce more things, stop trashing him. If you don't, trash away.

So you don't see that as a down side to byond, that 99.9% of developers scrap their game, becoese they lack motivateion, and devotion. To your response, personally I rather them not start a project If they're not gonna finnish It.

I'd love for more games to be finished. And I'm sure that publically trashing people who've released great games is exactly the way not to get more games finished.

As a developer of less-popular games, all I get out of this is the hope that I don't have Silk's player base start liking my games, or I'm just going to be trashed like crazy. That kind of crap drove away another of our best developers once -- popularity leading to a fan base criticizing her every decision. If I were in her boots I'd probably do the same thing -- tell people to screw off, and then stop producing games.

PS. Dreadron, It's not only about the fans though, It's a dishonor to developer, the game, and all the people that helped you. It's like saying screw you all, I got you to wast all your time helping me, you did all that for nothing.

But why shouldn't DWO be on the hub? It's still one of the better BYOND games out there. Just because it's not as complete as it could be doesn't mean that it's not worth playing.

I just used DWO/DBZ as examples, besides, no one has the DWO hosting files anyway, so It really Is wasting space.

Heck, it's the reason why I avoid releasing anything major. I've got several games on my PC that could really take off but I don't have the motivation to finish them because I know if I release anything I'm going to be forced by ingrate players to lock myself into it until it's done.
If I was going to get punished for not finishing something I started I wouldn't have even bothered learning DM.

It may not be 1,9, but the 1.52 that was the last public release of DWO is still available to download from its hub page.

Yes, I'm a silk hater, I'm ashamed back when I first came to Byond, I looked up to his hard work, but now I know It was just a front.


PS. I didn't make this thread to trash on Silk,although he deserves everey bit of It, but sam couldn't see that.
