This is a rather simple and straightforward request. I'd like to have pager alerts inverted so newer messages are at the top while older alerts are at the bottom.

This just makes way more sense.

At one time I was ordering active conversations by the last activity time; however I found that an alphabetical listing to be more aesthetically pleasing, and it had the added benefit of culling out code that would be needed to keep the left pane up to date by resorting the list.
