I could host one for September, but I don't know if people would like my edgy themes.
In response to Rocknet
theme 1: dank memes

theme 2: jet fuel can't melt steel beams + bd9

theme 3: the police are evil and/or the mods are communists

I'm considering a GiaD for September 11th.

3 themes would be:

1: Mass Shootings

2: Terrorism as Heroism aka what it actually is.

3: Something along the lines of a "mental illness simulator" (such as anything that relates to not following binary genders, furries, otherkin, etc).

Now, I am still working on defining these themes, but you could make a real great contest winning game by combining all three themes!

This GiaD idea came to me when I was considering creating a game called Dindu Muffins, where you play as either a white shooter or a black shooter. If you're a white shooter and you're caught by the authorities, you get no memorials, no special hashtags etc. However if you are a black shooter, you get news articles and interviews about you you dindu nuffin, how you a good boy (because girls can't be shooters) and you was going to church.

This is nothing that could get on the BYOND hub I supposed, but it could still be made and hosted off-site.

make a game where if you're a white murderer trying to revive the confederacy you get burger king and due process

but if you're a black cigarette salesman you get choked to death

you might have to host this one off site as well
I personally don't think BYOND's had its true golden age, yet. It'll come relatively soon, though.

From what I've read, the early years (pre-2004?) were pretty golden. Compared to when I joined, this site is really a ghost town.

The blog frontpage always had new interesting posts about new developments, games, and other random blog stuff. Check some of these captures and you almost always see some game development-related posts.

All the best tutorial articles were written by users way more intelligent than the people around these days (myself included), which is probably why really good articles don't show up anymore/as frequently.

I really preferred this layout for the forums. The reply tree format pretty much made threads impossible to derail.

The games page has seen better times too, in my opinion.

I thought the reply trees looked horrifying. That was one of the things I was glad changed in the site overhaul.

There was always this alternate view that showed topics. The new website "removed the Thread view", not "added the current view". That was my first complaint when it happened.

It could've been made to look better without any overhaul, using basic CSS.
(although, looking at the HTML source, it's actually pretty terrible)

Ew, I'm in some of those...

It's always embarrassing seeing the key "Duelmaster409" in archives like these.

Are you saying you're Duelmaster409?? :O
That is what I'm saying, yes. I remember you and Prazon too, just never bothered to say hi.

EDIT: that came out really rude!! Sorry!

Naw I didn't read it as rude lool <3
I enjoy BYOND even to this day, having been around since 2006 I believe under a different key that I've forgotten. I am no programmer, no pixel artist, no developer. I am simply a person who found this website through google, back when I was really into tower defense games, and ended up on Castle. From there I blossomed out into playing anything and everything I could find on this glorious website. There were people everywhere, friends to be made, enemies to be defeated, and that random drunkard that would come about from time to time. All in all I love this site, even if I don't seem to show it, and will continue to use it, even when I'm old and have gray hair. (IF IT'S STILL AROUND THAT IS.)

PS and EDIT: I miss the old pager, can we bring it back? Nostalgia commands me to ask.
I voted 2005, but in truth I can't remember those years well enough to peg down exactly when BYOND was at its prime for me.

It was before 4.0, while I was still highly active on BYOND, and had hopes for its future development/ideology. That ended for me with 4.0, as I heavily disagreed with the direction and tech choices BYOND was making, and so my 'golden age' of BYOND ended, and I moved on to other things, like women, alcohol, going outside, and being great at racking up /played time on MMORPGs.

My favorite memories are my time spent in Hedgerow Hall, my (sadly) very short sprint with DDT as a very young developer, discussions with Foomer in his very pretty-looking world, and all of the talks over the years with quite a few awesome people like splatty, Stephen and far too many others to list.

As a community and programming language, BYOND was a brilliant second step for me, because it embodies some of the same things that make popular mobile frameworks like Ionic work - It is ridiculously simple to go from nothing to 'Holy cow, I've made an app for my phone!'; except back then, that was multiplayer. While I could host MUDs in C and knew how to tweak them enough to add and remove things, I didn't really 'get' programming as a trade or tool, until a year or two into BYOND.

P.S: I'm showing up to your wedding whether invited or not, Stephen ;) I fully expect splatty to be there as well, in an Octodad costume.

I could see splatty just plowing through neat little outdoor chairs on a British summer, tentacles everywhere.

The fact that, in your personal head canon, Stephen, there has to be tentacles involved is what makes me worry about you.
I was most frequent from 2002-2005, So I'm gonna be biased. Feels like it was a lot longer though. Why are things so dead now?
2007 DBZ:Heroes United - Frank06 (without focu training) My 1st game Iplayed on BYOND.
