I'm on Win98, and I do not know how to disable my firewall. I also do not know if I have a router... Think you guys/gals can help?

If you don't know weather you have a router or not, most likly you don't.

Click Start->Run and type in: command A black command prompt window should appear. In that, type: winipcfg It will display a bunch of information. The important part here is the line with "IP address" written on it. Next to that there should be a bunch of numbers separated by dots, like this: 12.134.56.7 Tell us what those numbers are (exactly!) and we should be able to tell if you have a router. |
I do not know what Firewall I have, but my ip that it mentioned is 0.0.0.0. I think thats a router one.

Okay, I dont have a router. So what do I do about my Firewall? As I said, its in win98, and i do not know if its SE or not.
EDIT: Wait a minute, there's two options with 2 IPs. One is the one I mentioned, the other is 192.168.1.66 |
try connecting to
http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 if you can connect to one of those, it's prolly your router, which prolly has a builtin firewall |
It was a slow connect, so I didnt. So I dont have a router. But that doesnt explain why I couldnt host.

You do have a router. Trust me on this, I have a lot of experience with networking; the people who are saying otherwise don't know what they're talking about. =) (I know this because the IP address "192.168.1.66" is one of the IP addresses that are reserved for use by computers which are behind routers.)
Try clicking these links: (Try all of them!) http://192.168.1.254 http://192.168.1.1 Hopefully one of those will bring up a password prompt for your router. Try them all and see. If that doesn't work, do the winipcfg thing I mentioned before and look for a line that says "Default Gateway". The IP there should look something like 192.168.XXX.XXX (where the XXXs are actual numbers). Try entering that IP into the address bar of your web browser, and if you've done it right you should get a password prompt. Once you've managed to get a password prompt, post what the prompt says. For example, it might say "Please enter the password for 'DI-704P'" (that's the one I get, because the model number of my router is DI-704P). You need to find out that model number before I can tell you how to set up the router to allow you to host. |
Ouch. That explains why I cant host. I have SBC Yahoo! DSL as a router. I'll have to ask dad about the pass.

I can't find that exact router on portforward.com, but this one looks closest: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/ SBC/sbc1000hw/BYOND_Dream_Seeker_Host.htm
Once you've found out the password, just follow that guide. |
