Two questions about sound files

First of all does anyone have any suggestions for how to balance sounds? My .wav sounds are very hard to hear over the .mid background music.

My second question involves background music. How large of a file could be used as music without causing too much lag?
Is there any advantage of using .mid instead of .wav files for back ground music?

midis are much smaller and so easyer to load but with the new Fmod (think thats what its called) im not sure how wave files are effected with there loading times.
