I have no acting skill, but if it works by putting your name in front of something, you could perform something like this:

act "holds a Badgersword of Bleeding +9 in his left paw"

act "clutches a jet-black stone...\nYou feel pain searing through your body! (32 HP loss)

or even...

act "scrounges around and finds a Badger Sword!

How do you like that?

Besides faking people out, what does it do?

You can act.

"Some things that I thought I would never see" is HRH dominating the Babble forum! But I guess this is a good thing compared to the recent flame-war junk in other areas of the Forum.

Lexy, seems like you have a winner here! You just need to run it longer! Maybe throw-up the beta for anyone to host so that we can all get our 'HRH-drug-fix' until the next updates? We just have to realize that nothing is permanent during these tests, but atleast we can stress-test it while you're offline sleeping/eating/enjoying the real world, etc.

Please, no. I loved Red Cap, but when she put it up for hosting, I stopped liking it.

That's all it does. What more do you need?

Well, let's just say that the average bandit does not want to mess with you if you have a badger sword of bleeding +9 in your left paw. And, even if they're not sure that there -is- such thing as a Badger Sword of Bleeding +9, do you think they're going to stick around to find out? Or, if you were trying to rip somebody off... you could do this:

say "I'll trade you 1000 durberries for 40 bakaroot!"
*You hear: Sure, if you really have that many.*
drop bakaroot *choose 1*
say "Oops, let me get the rest."
act "drops 999 bakarootss" // emulate the dropping bug, even!
*You see: Hedgerow Hair drops 40 Bakaroot*
*Both of you step off of your piles, but soon he realizes that he just traded 40 bakaroot for only 1 durberry! What a rip!*
run
vanish
climb
leap
leap
leap
leap
enter
unlock
open
close
lock
eat
eat
eat

See what I mean?

// emulate the dropping bug, even!

You mean the bug that was fixed on Saturday? ;-)
1. Specializing in combat... so far, there have been no real characters to specialize fully in combat stats/skills. The Thugs were Foxes (comparable to a an illusionist/thief class, for those not familiar with HRH) with their attributes and skills piled into the physical area... Thanos seems to be a Badger with Fox skills. The only combat specialists I have seen are Badgers built expressly to bash Thanos and then log off. I remain convinced that a truly well-developed Rat would be an awesome character.

2. Flinging vs. Weapon Throwing... yes, thrown weapons can inflict more base damage, but there's two things to look at: economy and attributes. Throwing weapons have to be made, which requires iron (or for some weapons soon, wood)... even though they're made in batches, and sometimes recoverable, it's definitely easier to stockpile nuts and pebbles. Also, Flinging, being a skill developed primarily by Shrewish warriors, is not a scientific skill and relies more on Luck than Prowess. If you're the sort of fighter who tries to avoid direct confrontation, you'll probably be more invested in the former than the latter.

3. Acting has no in-game effect... it simply alters player perception. The same can be said for Disguise and Vanish, though, which both have been used to good effect. Acting becomes more significant when you realize how subtle some of the game effects, like magic, are. Another scam: someone comes up to you and says, "I'll give you 7 wood to make a barrel." Barrels cost 6 wood... instead of trying to make the barrel, though, you type "act "wastes 6 pieces of wood trying to make a barrel.", the failure message for making. You apologize to them, give them back the 1 "remaining" piece of wood, and keep the 6 for yourself. I don't want to suggest too many scams, to ruin it for con artists and honest merchants alike. :) But that should give you some ideas.

4. How would it sit with everyone that I'm thinking of making Thumping rabbit-only?

5. Running = 50% faster than walking, regardless of skill. Where running skill comes in handy is that being a trained runner allows you to run smarter, not harder... pace yourself, move more efficiently, etc., and thus run farther before exhausting your reserves.

Rabbit-only? I think not. Anybeast that learns the ways of hares should be able to thump and be thumped. One possibility is to make Rabbits able to thump and understand thumps perfectly, regardless of skill.

Thumping isn't just knowledge, though, it involves a Rabbit's specialized physiology (overdeveloped hing legs, especially acute auditory/vibrational sense)... mice or rats might know the code, but they lack the apparatus to send or receive signals.

The logic here is no more flimsy than the logic which allows ground-thumping to send signals anywhere in even the comparatively small region of HRH... and in all cases where pieces of flimsy logic contest each other, the determination is made by answering the question, "Which way is most interesting?" To me, it's interesting to have an instant global communication system that can only be used by one character type out of eight... it will help give Rabbits some definition, some place in the world.

I'm picturing Rabbits as taking the place of telegraphers in the 19th century...or the internet in the 21st.

Picture this: the Pissed Off Merchants Guild has encountered a shortage of iron. No one seems to be home at the rock pile, and time is short so they can't afford to gather the quantities they need. They have their Rabbit put out a global thump... need iron willing to trade please respond. The responses start coming in: have 20 iron at driftwood lake need nuts, have 13 iron Elsinore dining hall, 6 iron free for good cause, and so on. Private thumps are exchanged back and forth, deals are struck, meetings or deliveries arranged, good are exchanged.

All very fascinating, but if everyone and their sibling can thump, then every would-be merchant is going to put points in that skill, as will every bandit who wants to listen in. If only Rabbits can thump, then suddenly it's a whole new dimension to the game. No organization or establishment is complete without a Rabbit... Rabbits can bring in reports of bandit attacks, help field groups connect with home base, etc. News, weather, current events... all the domain of the Rabbit.

High thumping skill helps make sure every thumper hears your global calls, and it helps you make sure that only your intended recipient hears (or can decode) a private thump. You can only intercept a private thump if you're on the same map as the sender or reciever... which brings whole new meaning to the phrase "sweep the room for Bugs."

By the way, I like getting feedback, but I'm not really likely to take suggestions that sound like a lecture. If you've read my written policies and procedures, you would know that all suggestions should be phrased in the form of an apology.

I would, except that my second greatest fear is that if I left the game world running without me there to guide the session and attend to the server, the magic would be ruined and the whole game world would fall apart.

I was considering making one as a second character but I don't want to be using two characters, I have a hard time seperating them. Maybe I'll rotate a bit...

4. How would it sit with everyone that I'm thinking of making Thumping rabbit-only?

I suppose that would sit ok with me.
Maybe just allow non-rabbits to interpret it but not use it.
Another set of options would be to give rabbits thumping a larger range, be much easier to use and understand, and that sort of thing.

I don't particularly prefer any of those options over another so whatever you choose would be fine.

I know you've probably thought of all that but I just thought I'd mention it...

5. Running = 50% faster than walking, regardless of skill. Where running skill comes in handy is that being a trained runner allows you to run smarter, not harder... pace yourself, move more efficiently, etc., and thus run farther before exhausting your reserves.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification.

Only 2 more days! :p

Do you have any place we can read that policy outside of the game? I must have missed it in the help section while playing.
In response to English
If I don't put it anywhere in the game for you to read it, why would I provide it outside? :)
In response to Lesbian Assassin
To confuse me of course ;)
In response to Lesbian Assassin
<font face="courier" size="1">Rabbit-only thumping is ok I guess, but as mentioned before by others, maybe some of the other creatures could learn to interpret some kinds of common thumping 'conversations', just like me coming to Germany - I have had no formal language training, but two years of listening here have given me enough knowledge to understand basically whats goes on around me, certainly better than a tourist. But talking back is still difficult...

You would get my vote if other animal 'languages' evolved: squirrels get nut-banging-on-rocks, beavers get tail-slapping-on-wood/water, etc.

Ooo! Here's a thought: Beavers with beaver-lodges on the water, and all that relates to it (river-water control?) Hmmm...

Oh great! Now you people have got me infected with this HRH fanaticism... :)</font>
But we never got to the point!

We should all be bashing Shadowdarke becuase HE CHEATED! HE DISGRACED HIMSELF! He is always telling us not to cheat and whatnot...BUT HE CHEATS!

Argh! Doesn't anybody understand me! AHHHHHHHHHHH

Reminds me of when I discovered how to easily create dozens upon dozens of blankets in the blink of an eye.

My conscience got the better of me, so I tossed out the ones I created using the exploit and reported the bug to Lexy. =P

Get a few people to be admins that you trust, are dedicated players, and know a lot about the game. Just don't give them anything like ban or kick, maybe a silence command and freeze command to stop bad players until you get back. You could also program something that stops the player from creating a new character if they are frozen or something. Well just a thought.
