I'm just curious because Writing generally isn't that lucrative, and that happens to be my major, what I do have is a minor in CS. But what are companies looking for exactly? Does the Bachelor degree matter so much or is talent really all that's necessary? I guess along a related note, what fields and languages are most lucrative? Is freelancing an option?
I don't know too much about this, but if I was hiring someone for freelance work:

Advanced knowledge of your field(cpu efficiency, time taken to complete, squashing bugs, good design habits, etc.), dedication, and references and/or a portfolio would be a plus.

Starting small to get a few notches under your belt wouldn't hurt, aye?
Like Cheetoz, I also don't have much knowledge on the subject, but examples of your previous work would be very helpful as well.
