Hence why the typical RTS game fails to impress me much; sure there's some real strategy involved, but the overall strategy-to-twitch ratio isn't that much higher than a lot of out-and-out action games out there.

That's probably true, and probably also the reason why I'm terrible at playing RTS in multiplayer - as a rule, I like strategy (or stealth) rather than fast-paced action. I still find FPS games like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament fun, but most of my serious gaming is either strategic (RTS, and less often turn-based) or stealthy (the Thief series).

That said, I do agree that AoE is about as good as it gets, from what I've seen.

Yup. I have the entire Age series and Warcraft III, and I've played C&C several times (the gameplay in each C&C game is pretty much identical, with a couple of minor changes). The Age series beats the rest hands down; Warcraft III isn't bad, but its main appeal is its graphics.

Haven't checked out AoM, but I will admit to being intrigued.

In my opinion, AoM is the best RTS ever. :-) I recommend you at least check out the demo.

Your right, my bad.

Half life has some major problems, the main is the graphics and sound. Gore is a fully textured and 100% suround sound with realistic sound. Each gun has its own sound, each char has his own arsinal, each char has his own tired and wornout noises. It truely is an all around good game. And its easy to mod and add onto. So you can mod a server and everyone on your server has those mods, with no downloading time.

Don't judge a game based solely on its graphics and sound. Have you ever heard the saying "don't judge a book by its cover"?

See above.

Sounds like it uses way of handling network traffic very much like BYOND's; and we all know how much lag that generates.
In response to Crispy
Nope, every little lag, even for a 56k. And the cover on gore is very good, but im not judging it on that, its multiplayer game play is unserpasted. I have played counterstrike and didnt like it that much. There was little skill invalved besides "Aim for the head". Heck i can aim for the head and kill people all day, but gore, things like heavie weapons equals chars that slow down after a min of running and light weapons that will let you stay fast, but you cant do much damage with, will really ad some skill on knowing what weapon to use when. The graphics and sound make a good game better. They arnt the cover, there the whole book.hell if you dont care about the graphics, wolfinstien is as good of a game as counterstrike, and the sound is almost as good. You have to be the only person i have ever met that like any fps over gore. And im not joking. Maybie your computer is a little slow and it didnt run right or something. But even the demo is better than CS. The full game has tons of mods, tons of maps, and tons of good people to play with. I suppose some people just cant see a good game when it whips out its quad shot gun and blows your head off.
In response to Scoobert
Seriously? I've been playing 007 Nightfire for my GC all weekend, and if you cant aim for the head theres no point in running around like mad trying to hit people in the head....or did i say that already...aiming for the head is fun...very fun...im gonna go kill some AI Bots...im gonna aim for the head...im gonna kill lots of em...im done here.

I guess it never came across to you that I never said Half-Life itself is better than Gore, I said a modification is better than Gore. I even hate the normal Half-Life game, but I still think it's better than Gore, and if you only play Gore for it's fully textured whatevers, then thats not a good thing.... I also don't think you know what a modification is, it's not just adding stuff, most mods now are total conversion meaning no matter what, you would have to download them since they don't use the basic game files, obviously you believe modifications are just adding special items to maps or something like that.... Plus, it is impossible to "mod a server", you modify the game, not the server, requiring you to download the specified files and then run the client which will read the information and access the correct files so that you may view the world and perform actions(Running basic setups through the original game's engine, in Specialists mods case it would be the Half-Life engine), what Gore modification is, is probably just changing settings and adding in special features which can be accessed through the normal game files, which would get boring over time.

So you can mod a server and everyone on your server has >those mods, with no downloading time.

I'm sorry, but I'm buckled over by what you said. So just ignore the paragraph above for 1 second, do you buy the game and it comes with pre-made modifications? Any other way, it is impossible to not have to download something from a server that is a 3rd party placement of the game, or your just assuming that everyone in the world can join that server and they will always have that modification because its a must.(Oh, and you don't download modifications from servers, only from the modification's website, any other way the engine usually tells you client.dll does not match, or a similiar message.)

It's a RTS game made by the best RTS game makers ever.

For those unfamiliar with the genre, RTS is shorthand for "Speed-Clicking Contest." Some budding game designers noticed that even the most basic, straightforward action games included dreadfully high amounts of strategy, and so set out to develop a game that would eliminate this tiresome and obsolete concept of strategy once and for all, and thus, a genre was born. No, I don't know why they're called RTS games when no phrase that can possibly be formed with these three letters can accurately describe the gameplay of this genre; maybe it's French or something.

I wholy disagree. The warcraft games are all about strategy. However, just like in real life, you must make your actions quick. You don't have all day to sit around and waste time while your enemy is preparing an attack on you. This is where the real time part comes in. Though, one thing I have to admit is that the strategies involved in the games are static ones. Once these are learned, you really have nothing more to master in the games. Get these first. These two units will work great against these particular guys. I know he has hundreds of these guys so lets make bunch of these two guys. There are hundreds of these little strategies involved in these games.

These games can be extremely fun to play with the right people.

Well... Modifacations dont have to be this bigo thing. Mods are just changes to the game. Now halflife my have big mods that do so much to the game, but most of the time its mostly the same game. Gore is good because every server you enter can be totaly diffrent. No things like skin mods and stuff dont change with the servers, but you can download them. My server is pritty much the boss server right now. I also make skin packs and what not. The problem with CS is the mods dont really change the game play that much. In each gore server the game play is diffrent. And i dont play the game for the good texture detail, or the 3D sound, but they sure make the game better. The demo is so limited, although you can still do a lot to it, there are only 3 levels in the second demo(the demos are really beta tests from before the game was released) I have played counter strike, and i have played many of the mods, and i found them all to be simular. All they really did was change the menu, add another training area and misions and some new guns. But they all are almost the same. I never have been able to see what people see in it. I like Dues Ex better, and that game is almost as old as CS. Dues Ex uses the UT engine, but is nothing, at all, like UT besides the fact that its a FPS. I just think that some of these mods should do a little more, really change the game, make it a new game rather than changing the images and adding a few new maps. Gore its self is an everchanging game. Each user adding in his own ideas and creations, making a better game each day. And it helps that the main creator of the game is always chatting on the forums.

You obviously have only played Valve modifications to it, such as Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, and Deathmatch Classic.... You don't even know what your talking about it seems, every single mod besides the ones made by Valve have been totally different(Except for the small conversion mods), Counter-Strike is not even anything like Half-Life! So all your using is one of the 3 things I'm going to list, bad judgement, bad taste, or your just desperate to prove me wrong.

Gore is good because every server you enter can be totaly diffrent. No things like skin mods and stuff dont change with the servers, but you can download them. My server is pritty much the boss server right now. I also make skin packs and what not.

You can do that with Half-Life, oh and didn't you say no downloading? Yet right there you said you can download model changes.

The problem with CS is the mods dont really change the game play that much. In each gore server the game play is diffrent. And i dont play the game for the good texture detail, or the 3D sound, but they sure make the game better.

Ahh, heres where you catch yourself.... Counter-Strike is a Half-Life modification, sure you can buy it but it's still a modification since it was created directly from the Half-Life engine. Therefore how can you play a Counter-Strike modification? Sure some games are similar to it, but they are a Half-Life mod as is Counter-Strike.

The demo is so limited, although you can still do a lot to it, there are only 3 levels in the second demo(the demos are really beta tests from before the game was released) I have played counter strike, and i have played many of the mods, and i found them all to be simular.

The demo is enough to draw me from the game, and I am seriously doubting you have played more than the 3 basic come-with-the-Half-Life updated game mods.(Now 4, Ricochet is the new one.)

All they really did was change the menu, add another training area and misions and some new guns. But they all are almost the same.

Yep, all the mods use the headcrab skins and Gordon skins, right? Also, they use the same sounds, music, and graphics from what your saying, wrong!

I never have been able to see what people see in it.

Mostly because it seems to me your lieing about half the things you have said, or are just poorly mislead by your down sizing of the game.

I like Dues Ex better, and that game is almost as old as CS. Dues Ex uses the UT engine, but is nothing, at all, like UT besides the fact that its a FPS.

Don't change the subject.

I just think that some of these mods should do a little more, really change the game, make it a new game rather than changing the images and adding a few new maps. Gore its self is an everchanging game. Each user adding in his own ideas and creations, making a better game each day. And it helps that the main creator of the game is always chatting on the forums.

More chitter chatter like you don't know what your talking about, you want creator interactivity? Join a Half-Life community, most of the mods were created spectacularily but just between friends, then they become a huge game! http://www.natural-selection.org - That game has totally proven that Half-Life modifications do that, if you check out most of the websites you see the creators as the most active users on their forums, not just to enforce rules but to help people understand concepts and to get ideas for the game.

Now that I feel my word has been said, I'm going to stop, since this is going to turn into one of those Dareb-like arguments where you keep trying and trying and trying, till you get to the point of where you have no sources to back you up and you start saying whatever.

I have played the game, i have played many of the mods, and i stand by what i am saying. I know that CS was a mod of Half life, and i know you can buy CS as a full game too. I still think most of them don't do a ton to the game. Now its best that we stop arguing now, because is apparent we both have favorite games and don't want to change that for anyone. So lets just both shut up on this topic.

A lot like red alert 2 and mech commander 2, but mech commander takes less real time strategy and more good setup.
In response to Scoobert
Crotch shots are funny. My favorite thing to do it set the game to demolition mode(in Nightfire) where the red team defends a sat. dish and the blue team attacks it, on the level skyrail(or something like this)they all sit atop the higher building and guard the dish like good little ai bots, you stand atop the other building the the AT-420 Sentinal(a guided missile, like the fly-by-wire missile in perfect dark) and just blast 5 or 6 of them away with each missile.

Don't forget C+C Tiberian Sun! 'S a good game!
Dune 2000, (also by westwood) is about 15 years old, but is still a good game. Better still, if you've got a good PC, you can play Emperor: Battle for Dune which is also a good game.
In response to Hazman
I though Dune was OK, but even Red Alert one was better. Tiberian sun was a nice change in the C&C series, and it was well played on my computer. I think things like subterranean vehicles rocked. But RA2 blew them all out of the water(being the newest). I thought they went in the wrong direction with Renegade. Nox is another good game by Westwood. Although it doesn't hold my attention very long, i like it because its much like Gauntlet Ledguons(i know thats horribly miss spelt, but its late and my spell checker wont correct it).

Shoot.I would have felt wierd if I was wrong.ITs one of my favorite games, but I have never really played it.lol.It looks so awesome.
