I have hundreds of projects that I'd like to do, but, they all require lots of art. So, I've been working on my pixel art skills over the past few weeks.

For years I have put together many RTS projects, but always ran into some issues and limitations with DM. Whenever DM gets new features, I usually redo the RTS project and take another crack at it.

A couple days ago I started working on a new RTS project and ran into a few more roadblocks again with fog of war (the non-laggy, but still complex kind) and a few other issues, so I decided to drop the project for now and try something different.

I love Tower Defense games, so, I've decided to take a crack at one (for the fifth time), but not entirely sure what theme to go with.

I originally wanted to do a sort of era progression theme, where you start in the stone age and work your way up to modern times, with your "towers" being upgraded through the eras and the waves as well. So you'd basically have to keep your towers upgraded enough to keep up with the invaders' progression and so on, but I realized the amount of pixel art that would be required and didn't really want to devote the time and resources to it.

With all that said, if anybody has any neat theme ideas that wouldn't require much pixel art (complicated pixel art anyway) and still allow the game to be diverse and not simplistic, I'd be more than happy to hear about them.
Kitchen TD. You can have a bunch of simplistic art (fridge, toaster, etc), and just "upgrade" those. I could elaborate further if it's interesting enough.

Interestingly unique, but, don't think I want to use that type of theme. Thanks, though. :P
Or, you could make it something like you're on a counter, and have towers like utensils, spices, and the like, who defend against the onslaught of vegetables and other food items.
How about a 'Mother Nature' theme? Where you will be attacked by waves of flowers, bushes and trees?
You are elfs that defend against orcs ;p
Critter defense - with waves of mice, squirrels and the roid rage badger!
The theme is almost irrelevant. What's more interesting is what the towers and enemies can do. Bloons TD is neat because of how balloons are nested inside of each other and how the towers' abilities change as you upgrade them. It doesn't matter that the enemies are balloons and the tower is a monkey throwing light sabres like boomerangs.

Think of what you want the enemies to be able to do, then think of how a theme could support that. Worrying about the theme will only limit what you come up with.

If you need graphics, just use icons from your other games.
