I am currently looking into buying 2 200 Gig Seagate hard disks. At
the moment i am running 2x80 gig seagate ide hard disks. What i am
thinking is to get 2x200 gig SATA hard disks and get a SATA card.
I know there is limits on the speed of PCI slots. I will eventually
upgrade my motherboard so that i have one that supports SATA.

So here is my question, would it be better to upgrade to 2x200 GIG
SATA hard disks or IDE hard disks. If SATA, what SATA card would you
suggest, on www.umart.com.au . And another general question, do i have
to buy an extra cable for the PCI SATA controller?

General question here too, can i run both SATA and IDE at the same
time? Becuase i want to use ide as storage and run xp off my SATA
drives.

Im using xp sp2 so im guessing it shouldnt be that hard to use sata with it.

I also know that SATA increases airflow in your system as it has smaller cables than ide. What would you guys suggest? IDE goes at 100mb/s, SATA card goes at 133mb/s, and SATA goes at 150mb/s, and im guessing if i ever upgrade my mobo it will have SATA.

I would suggest waiting until SATA2 comes out and drives are upgraded to it, then upgrading your motherboard. SATA drives will work much faster even on a PCI slot because many of them have much higher buffering speeds. Last I heard SATA2 wasn't that far away and is supposed to support speeds up to 300 mb/sec. Hopefully it doesn't cost a whole bunch, though.

There is no "7200 RPM Hard Drive" that can use a full 100MB/s. The Benefit of SATA is RAID 0,1, and 2. which can barley use the 150MB/s. Anyway go ahead and get em, you can make 1 big 400Gig HDD :),Or 1 very fast 200Gig HDD. (raid 2 is for redundancy)

The cards are useless because it needs a constand feed to be able to speed it up so it really doesnt do anything but incress the max speed

Hard drive speed is actually quite important performance-wise; especially if you're short on RAM, but even if you're not. Sick of loading times? The hard drive's the culprit.

My new SATA 160 GB drive seems to go faster than my 40 GB IDE drive, but still... >_>

The 40 GB IDE drive could have been a 5200 RPM drive. while the SATA is most likey a 7200 RPM.

Now if you want top speed, You need 2 WD Raptors 10000RPM HDDs :)

I got a 80GB hardrive and it took me less than amonth to fill it up. I have to delete old thing so I can get new things. I'm planning on buy a 250GB hard drive. That should last me a good 2 months I hope.
